Grass clippings, branches and hedge trimmings pile up fast in a Benoni summer. You have three options: take it to a municipal drop-off yourself, have your garden service remove it, or book a once-off bakkie load.
Free municipal drop-off sites (Benoni area)
The City of Ekurhuleni runs mini dumpsites where residents can drop garden waste at no extra cost. In the Benoni customer care area they are:
| Site | Address |
|---|---|
| Northmead | Hospital Street |
| Actonville | Daya Street |
| Cloverdene | Fourth Road |
Hours: 07:00 to 19:00 daily from October to March, and 07:00 to 18:00 from April to September, including public holidays (closed on Christmas Day). Source: City of Ekurhuleni. Check with the city before a big trip, since hours and sites can change.
Keep garden waste separate from household rubbish. The city treats it as recyclable, and mixed loads may be turned away.
Don't put it in your wheelie bin or on the verge
Big piles of branches on the pavement count as illegal dumping, and the refuse truck won't take them. If you can't transport it yourself, pay someone to remove it.
Having your garden service remove it
Most regular garden services remove the clippings from each visit. Ask before you sign up whether that's included, because some leave the bags on site. See what a garden service includes.
Bigger jobs usually cost extra:
- A full bakkie load after a big cut-back or tree work.
- Tree stumps and thick branches, which may need cutting up first. For big trees, see tree felling in Benoni.
- Builders' rubble or soil mixed in with garden waste. Many garden services won't take these.
Questions to ask before you pay for removal
- Is the price per load or per bag, and how big is a load?
- Where will it be dumped? Ask for a registered site, not an open field. Illegal dumping near your area is everyone's problem.
- Is cutting branches to size included?
For typical rates, see garden service prices in Benoni, or compare weekly garden services, many of which include refuse removal.
